LIVING CANVAS

BRIEF: Design Institute.

SOFTWARES: Autodesk Autocad, Photoshop, Trimble Sketchup

DESCRIPTION: This structure houses five independent design programs of Art, Architecture, Interiors, Fashion, and photography, all nestled between high-rise residential building and a commercial street. The goal is to maximize the public dynamism of the Design Institute, where the CANVAS is simultaneously both an art object and a container for art. The CANVAS structure splits up the city's skyline into a fully-integrated form and new urban silhouette. Geometry is manipulated from the inside, volumes are shifted, voids are filled with vegetation, and when the students are present it becomes a living canvas. This project creates a constant dialogue between the building and its environment through a visual and tangible relationship between residential blocks and a commercial street. In the heart of the building, the "canvas" splits open, giving way to a large, central open space, providing 360 degree views throughout the city. Here students can participate in public talks and enjoy a new form of collaboration that unites the building interiors and exteriors, people, the city, and plant life.

Located in the heart of Mumbai , the site’s position ensures its importance in the future cultural landscape and its connection to both, the city and the bay. The planned building will house five independent programs, of Art, Architecture, Interior, Fashion and Film and Photography nestled between high-rise residential buildings and a commercial street. The five programs are linked together with interactive common floor and Sky Lobbies, where the programs mix in the outdoor green spaces, looking over the skyline of Mumbai and the Bay.

The concept , “Living Canvas,” aims to maximize the public dynamic of the project. The canvas is simultaneously an art object and a container for art, holding all the various forms of art. The canvas splits, letting us perceive the skyline of the city, fully integrated the form into the new urban silhouette. Geometry is manipulated from the inside; volumes are shifted, voids are filled with vegetation, and when the visitor comes in the space becomes a living canvas.

A CONSTANT DIALOGUE BETWEEN INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR

The spatial vision of the “living canvas” is also expressed through the desire to connect all the indoor areas with the exterior. This standpoint ensures a constant dialogue between the building and its environment, through a visual and tactile relationship. Nestling between residential blocksand a commercial street.

The design also apprehends the importance of the sustainability and performance architecture concept and its vital role in the process. The Living Canvas highlights the transition of space and enhances the idea of amalgamating ‘The built and the unbuilt’, producing areas that can be used to work, relax, and interact.
